The Wichita Aztecs eighth-grade team won the American division of the 13-14 age group at the National Youth Football Championships Nov. 29 in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Team members are Timon Adkins, Chivas Bates, Matthew Brinkmeyer, Braden Burleson, Prentice Byrd, Jose Chavarria, Anthony Deroulet, Mike Flynn, Torian Gonzalez, Myles Hill, Deadrian Johnson, Braxton Jones, Edward Lee, Matthew Madrano, Ray Mitchell, Justus Moreland, Mikey Moreno, Nate Muci, Ralph Perez, Chris Reed, Dietrich Rouse, Marco Saldana, TJ Thurman, Jaime Vela, Andy Villarreal and William Young. Coaches are Manny Martinez, Travis Bates, Chris Miller, Ray Mitchell, Clerance Reed, Zac Villarreal and Conrad Williams.

VOLLEYBALL

The 16s Lightning won third place at the Redlands Rendezvous tournament in Oklahoma City last weekend. Team members are Kaitlyn Carey, Molly Faragher, Elizabeth Stasiewiez, Taylor Locke, Rachael West, Arielle Steck, Haleigh Lewis and Jenny Gerlach.

Arenafootball2 gauges return to Wichita in 2010

An Arenafootball2 team could be playing in the new Intrust Bank Arena by 2010, arena general manager Chris Presson said, which would give the city two indoor teams.

Presson said he has spoken with three out-of-state people who are investigating Wichita as a market for Arenafootball2, an indoor league that will begin its 10th season in March.

Wichita had an Af2 team, the Stealth, from 2001 to 2004.

"We're still very much in the preliminary stages, but I can tell you that the league is excited about the prospect and, from a management standpoint, we are as well," Presson said.

The Arenafootball2 Web site lists 21 teams for the upcoming season, including franchises in Oklahoma City, Tulsa and Little Rock, Ark. Presson said those Midwest teams would provide natural geographic rivals for Wichita. The regular season runs from March to July.

Habs close to All-Star sweep

Only Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin prevented the Montreal Canadiens from an All-Star sweep.

The NHL announced the starting lineups Saturday for the midseason classic, and the host Canadiens filled four of the six slots for the Eastern Conference.

Crosby and Malkin, teammates and linemates with the defending East champion Pittsburgh Penguins, both broke the record for the most votes and claimed two forward positions. They will be joined up front by Montreal's Alex Kovalev.

Washington's Alex Ovechkin, the league's reigning MVP and second this season in goals and points entering Saturday, finished only sixth among Eastern Conference forwards in the voting -- which mystified his coach.

"It's dumb," Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau said, adding: "It's not right the best player in the game is not a starter."

Red Wings take Winter Classic

Outside in the elements, the Detroit Red Wings showed they can play the Chicago Blackhawks anywhere, anytime, in any conditions. And still beat them.

Pavel Datsyuk skated through two defenders for a go-ahead score in a three-goal second period, and the Red Wings scored twice in a 17-second span of the third Thursday to rally past the Blackhawks 6-4 in the Winter Classic at chilly Wrigley Field.

Temperature at faceoff on an overcast day was a very bearable 32 degrees, even though a wind blowing at 18 mph made it a bundle-up day for 40,818 fans at the second oldest baseball park in the major leagues.

"Holy Cow. It's Cold," read one sign, using the longtime catch phrase of the late Cubs broadcaster Harry Caray.

The teams used the same locker rooms that the Cubs (Blackhawks) and visitors (Red Wings) use during the baseball season. The players trudged on covered skates through tunnels, up and down steps and across a tarp-like carpet to the rink. The Red Wings' coaching staff kept their heads warm with fedoras.

Auburn's men's and women's coach Richard Quick, a standout swimmer at Wichita East High in the late 1950s and early 1960s, has been diagnosed with an inoperable cancerous brain tumor.

Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs said assistant coach Brett Hawke would serve as acting men's coach and co-head women's coach Dorsey Tierney-Walker will run the women's team while the 65-year-old Quick seeks treatment.

"We're currently in the process of looking for the best care possible to fight this," Quick said. "I want to thank the countless individuals that have passed along their well wishes, thoughts and prayers."

Quick was the coach of the U.S. team at the 1988, 1996 and 2000 Olympics and served as an assistant at the 1984, 1992 and 2004 Games.

Quick served as Auburn's coach from 1978-82 and returned to the job in 2007.

Scott comes off thebench to spark Terps

Da'Rel Scott got out of the doghouse in time to run over Nevada.

Benched for 2 ½ quarters after breaking curfew, Scott ran for 174 yards and two fourth-quarter touchdowns in 14 carries, and Maryland held off the Wolf Pack 42-35 in the Humanitarian Bowl on Tuesday.

Scott's 49-yard touchdown sprint early in the fourth quarter broke a 28-all tie and his 2-yard TD gallop put the Terps up 14 points.

Scott was one of seven Terrapins benched by coach Ralph Friedgen for curfew violations. He didn't get to play on the famous blue turf here until early in the third quarter and didn't touch the ball until the 5:55 mark of the third.

Once he got going, he couldn't be stopped.

Football playoff plan

I think its time that the NCAA gets serious about finding a national champion of college football.

I propose a playoff system that would use a combination of the BCS rankings and automatic invites from conference champions to build a 32 team bracket.

The plan would require the elimination of the conference championship games and bring the return to an 11-game schedule. The first-round games of the tournament would be during the Thanksgiving break. On the Sunday night after the third round, the bowl committees would send out invitations to all of the eliminated teams.

The remaining four teams in the playoff bracket would take a three-week break to allow time for the bowl games to be played.

The championship game would be scheduled for the week before the Super Bowl. This system will guarantee that all deserving teams will have a chance to play for a national title, while preserving the bowl game tradition.
